Top Ten Seakayaking Safety Tips

  • Weather Listen to the marine weather forecast and confirm locale conditions before you leave the beach.
  • Tides - Check tables for tide height and tidal current information.
  • Planning - Prepare a paddling plan and leave it with a reliable person.
  • Navigation - Have a chart, a watch and a compass.
  • Kayak - Check that kayaks are seaworthy, watertight and meet coast guard requirements.
  • Security - Share the experience, paddle with a friend.
  • Health - Bring along a drink, a good lunch, a change of dry clothes, an emergency shelter and a first aid kit.
  • Immersion - Wear a PFD and clothing suitable to go into the water.
  • Communication - Carry flares, a flashlight, a noise making device and a VHF radio
  • Safety - Have a towline, a spare paddle, and a bilge pump readily available.
