Paddle Canada would like to congratulate the winners of the 2003 WATERWALKER Festival and thank the filmmakers who submitted films for this year.The following winners have been selected for the 2003 WATERWALKER National Film Tour in cities throughout Canada, the United States and Internationally.

SURFING THE SEAL is a poetic documentary about the journey of 10 young people (age 16) during a 40 day canoe expedition on the Seal River in northern Manitoba. This film combines searching and contemplation while the group travels through the daily cycles of light, weather and sub arctic wilderness. Beyond the routine and facts of this canoe expedition, an underlying sense of humility and momentum are explored which is inherent to such an important river and method of travel.

WHITE WATER MAN is a music video for paddlers.The song was written and performed by Dan Burnett, with his band "Eddy & the Haystacks" as a a gag for the Beaver Canoe Club in Vancouver. Combining his music and video hobbies, Dan edited the video on his home computer and the result is a truly home-grown music video any "white water man" (or woman) will enjoy.

During the summer of 2002, two sea kayaking instructors from Newfoundland spent 14 days sea kayaking above the Arctic Circle on Greenland's west coast. Here they encountered a wild, rugged, dangerous and beautiful land. PADDLING WITH THE PAST is a film about two journeys - a journey of two close friends doing what they love to do - and a journey of exploration back to the roots of kayaking and the culture that created it.

In the Summer of 2001, our family finally got to canoe the Spanish River. We had paddled the Lady Evelyn, the Mississagi and the Sturgeon before - but we were now looking forward to canoeing miles of swifts and so nice rapids on the Spanish River.We left ourselves plenty of time to enjoy the river.We swam and relaxed in the rapids and enjoyed the hottest summer in recent memory.
