SURFING
THE SEAL is a poetic documentary about the journey of 10 young
people (age 16) during a 40 day canoe expedition on the Seal
River in northern Manitoba. This film combines searching and
contemplation while the group travels through the daily cycles
of light, weather and sub arctic wilderness. Beyond the routine
and facts of this canoe expedition, an underlying sense of humility
and momentum are explored which is inherent to such an important
river and method of travel.

It
takes only a second to turn a canoe trip in paradise into a horrific
ordeal of survival. Each year hundreds of paddlers find themselves
stranded on rivers or lost in the middle of the wilderness. We know
our paddle strokes and whitewater manoeuvres; we know our camp craft
and first aid but do we have the ability to survive in the wilderness.Filmmaker
and adventurer, Les Stroud, strands himself in the wilderness for
seven days and shows how you can survive a similar ordeal.

the Summer of 2001, our family finally got to canoe the Spanish River.
We had paddled the Lady Evelyn, the Mississagi and the Sturgeon before
- but we were now looking forward to canoeing miles of swifts and
so nice rapids on the Spanish River. We left ourselves plenty of time
to enjoy the river. We swam and relaxed in the rapids and enjoyed the
hottest summer in recent memory. |
